GPT-4 Has Been Released

OpenAI just announced their latest AI system called GPT-4. Reported as being more accurate, creative and collaborative that ChatGPT, it is able to solve more difficult problems using a broader general knowledge and enhanced problem solving skills.

Here's what it can do...

Top 5 Features of the New GPT-4

Advanced problem solving: With a much improved general knowledge set, and enhanced problem solving skills, you can give GPT-4 a situation and it can provide useful ideas and steps to solve a related problem. For example, you could ask it "How do you clean the inside a tank filled with piranhas?" and you'll get a useful list of ideas provided by the problem solving AI system. Other improvements over GPT-3 include accurate results from advanced reasoning inputs, like in this example from OpenAI:

Input:

Andrew is free from 11 am to 3 pm, Joanne is free from noon to 2 pm and then 3:30 pm to 5 pm. Hannah is available at noon for half an hour, and then 4 pm to 6 pm. What are some options for start times for a 30 minute meeting for Andrew, Hannah, and Joanne?

Output:

Andrew: 11 am - 3 pm

Joanne: 12 pm - 2 pm, 3:30 pm - 5 pm

Hannah: 12 pm - 12:30 pm, 4 pm - 6 pm

Common availability for a 30-minute meeting: 12 pm - 12:30 pm

Generate and read up to 25,000 words of text: This is a huge improvement over the 3,000 word limit of ChatGPT (based on the GPT3.5 platform) and allows for long form content creation, extended conversations and searching documents for summarizing and analysis (like Wikipedia pages, for example.)

Write code in all major programming languages: ChatGPT has transformed the lives of many programmers already, by helping them find bugs in their code, converting code from one language to another, and even flat out just writing code when given the task. GPT-4 improves on this incredible service by adding more supported languages and more accurate results.

Understands images as input: Possibly the best of all the new features is the ability of GPT-4 to interpret uploaded images and reason with them in sophisticated ways. For example, you could take a picture of items from your refridgerator and ask "What can I make with these ingredients?" and get some recipe ideas. Regular users of ChatGPT will recall that recipe suggestions, using a list of provided ingredients, is one of the most useful things ChatGPT can handle. This, of course, takes things to a whole new level given that you don't need to type out what you have on hand, but can just take a picture and GPT-4 will recognize the items and provide some ideas. Bon appetit!

Trained by humans for safer results: According to tests run by OpenAI, GPT-4 is 80% less likely to return disallowed content from requests. Some adults may not agree with that, but for a platform that is easily accessable and regularly used by kids, it's a great improvement. Additionally, GPT-4 is now 40% more likely to provide factual responses (compared to GPT3.5) which is critical when asking it to write your next political tweet😂. Also, GPT-4 is continually being improved and trained based on real-world results through an advanced monitoring system. This means that responses and results will simply get better and better the more GPT-4 is used.

Who is Using GPT-4?

As you might have heard, the latest version of Bing, the search engine from Microsoft, is now running on the newest "next generation" of OpenAI tech and claims to be more powerful than ChatGPT and customized specifically for search. Not surprising, given Microsoft's investment in OpenAI, but GPT-4 was trained on Microsoft's Azure AI supercomputers.

Some notable companies using GPT-4 already include: Duolingo, Be My Eyes, Stripe, Morgan Stanley, and Khan Academy.

While there are still some limitations with GPT-4, including social biases, and aggressive responses, the OpenAI team has made impressive steps forward with this release. If you have signed up for ChatGPT Plus you can try out GPT-4 right now. Everyone else can expect to see these new enhancements as they are rolled out in the coming months.
