Instagram Co-Founders Launch AI News Platform: Artifact
Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the Instagram co-founders who left Facbook in 2018, are launching a new social media platform: Artifact. Announced in this post, Krieger called it "a personalized news feed driven by the latest in artificial intelligence."

Systrom also tweeted about the service saying "Artifact - a personalized news feed using the latest ai tech." The name Artifact is, perhaps, a clever portmanteau of Artifical (Intelligence) and fact. While it isn't live for everyone yet, you can sign up for the waitlist by entering your phone number. Once acepted, you will receive an invite by text, according to the Artifact site.
Social Media Reaction
While there is certainly excitement around the annoucement, others have described it as just a rehash of , with this Platformer story calling it TikTok for text (because of the similarity of the algorithim putting content in your feed). Another Twitter user asked Systrom this question on his tweet:
Systrom did point out that "Artifact will feature news stories from both left and right-leaning outlets, though the company won’t allow posts that “promote falsehoods."
According to reports, your feed will contain stories from large publishers like The New York Times, all the way down to curated blog articles. Like TikTok, the more you read the more the AI algo will personalize your feed. The content recommendation system will also prioritize the duration of your reading (each article) over clicks, likes and comments.
Artifact will also feature a social component which will highlight articles from users you follow, along with their opinions on the articles. Should you really want to go at it with someone you'll also be able to privately discuss posts through a direct-message inbox.
