Today, Microsoft announced the launch of their new AI-powered Bing search and Edge browser. The goal being to use their OpenAI investment to deliver better search results, more complete and relevant answers, a new chat experience and the ability to generate content.
Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft said “Today, we’re launching Bing and Edge powered by AI copilot and chat, to help people get more from search and the web.” Microsoft estimate that there are about 10 billion search queries a day with about half of those going unanswered.
Microsoft's "AI copilot" aims to improve search results through more relevant answers (including in the familiar side bar) and by summarizing results so you don't have to search across multiple answers to find all the information you need. Bing will also offer a new interactive chat feature to allow searching using natural language. Similar to ChatGPT users can ask for help generating content, like a blog post, introduction email, or more information and detail on returned search results.
The Edge browser is also getting an overhaul, with AI capabilities embedded into the web brower's sidebar. This will allow users to ask AI about the page they are currently on, as well as ask for specific tasks in the sidebar while working in the main browser window. Anyone who has used the thesaurus or dictionary feature will likely enjoy this layout as well.

Microsoft has also applied their AI model to their core Bing search ranking engine, which led to the largest jump in relevance in two decades. With this AI model, even basic search queries are supposedly more accurate and more relevant.
Bing is running on the newest "next generation" of OpenAI and claims to be more powerful than ChatGPT and customized specifically for search.
Overall, the changes appear to be a big step forward for Microsoft and could change the way users interact with search and how they browse the web. While only available to a limited preview group, there is a waitlist and Microsoft have stated expansion to "millions more" in the coming weeks.
